Why do girls have friends like this?

Why do girls feel it is okay to have a "duff" (designated ugly fat friends)??? Are girls that screwed-up in the head to be friends with a less attractive girl simply to improve their chances with guys?? Do they feel that threatened by other girls to sink to such a level????????????????
