Type of Software is available that saves files on your laptop to the internet as a backup?

My friend recently got her laptop stolen and it got me thinking about how much of my Uni work is stored on the laptop. My mum once read an article about software where at the end of the day you initiate the software and it saves all the work that day to a file online. However being computer illiterate I wouldn't know where to start looking :)
