How can God expect us to believe in him? (Put simply)?

God tells us to believe in him even though we can't observe him. Based off a material book in a earthly language using earthly things as illustration and imagination. And he expects us to believe in his un-based claims rather then my drunk neighbors claims that fat green aliens abducted him and that their coming back to take over our planet. If he expects us to irrationally believe in him why can't we expect us to believe in Santa Claus or anything else that isn't real? The Bible teaches us to be naive, am I wrong?
